QR Codes (“Quick Response”) are being seen more and more in our everyday lives. If you’ve been to Japan, you may have seen how common they are over there. Not surprising when you realise that they were invented by a subsidiary of Toyota in 1994 !

If you haven’t noticed them yet in your locality, the increased popularity of smart phones and the extension of mobile internet facilities mean that you soon will.
For example, I was browsing the DVDs in my local supermarket a few weeks ago and on the back of some was a QR code. I scanned it with my smart phone and I was taken on to the internet where a short preview of the DVD was available.
Earlier this week, I saw an estate agent’s For Sale board outside a property. The board had QR code sticker in a corner and when I scanned it, I was taken to the estate agent’s web site.
A travel company recently produced a paid-for supplement to one of the quality national papers to advertise their holidays. Each featured destination had an article that had its own QR code which, when scanned, took you to the company’s web site.
But sending people to web sites is not the only thing you can do. For example, you can also do things like send an SMS text message or initiate a phone call.
I predict that very soon, we will be used to seeing QR codes in many different locations as applications grow.
